Hand Papermaking, Inc., is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization
dedicated to advancing traditional contemporary ideas in
the art of hand papermaking through publications and other
means.
The organization was founded in 1986 by Amanda Degener
and Michael Durgin, who were the magazine's original co-editors.
In 1993, Bobbie Lippman replaced Degener as co-editor. Durgin became sole
editor in 1995, until he passed the baton to current editor
Mina Takahashi in 2005. The award-winning designers
over the magazine's history have included Barb Schubring,
Don Carrick, Kent Kasuboske, Jeffrey Atwell, and Russell
Maret (the magazine's
current designer). Executive Director Tom Bannister joined the
organization in 1995. Hand Papermaking is overseen by a
dedicated Board of Directors and assisted by a Board of Advisors.
In addition to its main program, Hand Papermaking magazine
and newsletter, the organization has initiated additional
programs in order to promote the appreciation of handmade
paper. In 1988, an artist registry
was established, from which three juried kits have been produced. And in 1994, Hand Papermaking
presented the first in a bi-annual series of limited-edition
portfolios of handmade
papers.
