Winter 2014 Issue

Since papermaking began in China over 2,000 years ago, how has it evolved? Hand Papermaking’s Winter 2014 Magazine is guest edited by founder Michael Durgin and looks at hand papermaking in China today. This cover presents the luminous painting, “Memory of Autumn,” by Mansheng Wang. Nancy Norton Tomasko interviews this Chinese scholar-artist and paper philosopher, who shares his views on paper in practice, history, and present day.

Winter 1996 Issue

At the end of its 10th anniversary, Hand Papermaking’s Winter 1996 Magazine considered the handmade sheet of paper. This cover mixes of two traditions: a young Buddhist monk in Tibet carrying papermaking felts and a mould and deckle by American Lee Scott McDonald. Jane Farmer writes about her work in Tibet and Nepal with her collaborators on the Paper Road project, trying to support and reestablish Tibetan papermaking traditions.

Hand Papermaking’s Summer 2011 Magazine was a special full-color issue that celebrated its 25th anniversary. Amy Jacobs and Philip Bell collaborated on the moveable handmade paper piece featured on this cover, part of the HPM Paper in Motion Portfolio—Pop-ups! Ann Montanaro’s essay about the entire portfolio is in this issue alongside the beautiful color images of all 14 paper works in this collection.

To explore the history, technique, and current practice of Islamic papermaking, Hand Papermaking’s Winter 2012 Magazine features distinguished scholars of the field alongside up and coming practitioners. This cover shows masterful marbling, calligraphy, and painting from an illustrated manuscript c. 1142-1220 from present-day Afghanistan. Conservator Yana Van Dyke of the Metropolitan Museum of Art writes about paper objects in their Islamic Collection.
