Our 2020 Year-End Broadside Can Be Yours!

We are thrilled to announce our 2020 Year-End Broadside, which explores themes of loss, resilience, and transition in handmade paper and print. Three stellar artists—all based in Providence, Rhode Island—have crafted word, pulp, and ink for this exquisite, limited-edition publication. “See it now,” by renowned poet Cole Swensen is dedicated to the memory of fellow poet C.D. Wright. Papermaker Kate Aitchison produced a special variable edition of handmade paper, and Anna McNeary silkscreen printed text and imagery on the sheets.

Each of 2020’s year-end broadside is unique, the handmade paper constructed by Kate Aitchison on the mould using three vats of different colors of pulp. Inspired by watching each day’s setting sun and by Cole Swenson’s words, Aitchison dipped a square Western-style mould halfway into a vat of blue denim pulp and then halfway into pink pulp to form a gradient. She then dipped the back of the mould into a vat of bring orange pulp before finally couching, pressing, and drying each unique sheet. Artist Anna McNeary silkscreen printed a subtle, clear-gloss wave pattern layered with the poetry text.

Alta Price and Kelly Taylor Mitchell acted as art directors of the year-end broadside on behalf of Hand Papermaking, Inc. The full edition of 100 signed and numbered copies was completed in October, 2020.

Please consider donating today to Hand Papermaking’s ANNUAL YEAR-END FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN. Only the first 100 supporters who donate $125 or more will receive this year’s inspiring broadside! Your annual gift, whether it’s $1 or $1,000, directly supports Hand Papermaking as a contemporary, innovative, and forward-thinking organization that advocates for the art and traditions of handmade paper.
