Hand Papermaking initiated its Black Writers Fellowship Program in 2020 as one of several corrective steps to better fulfill our role as the journal of record that truly reflects the full breadth of work in our field. The first recipients last year were: Cheryl E. Edwards (Black Writers Fellowship: Reporter) who profiled DC–based, contemporary artist Preston Sampson in the Summer 2021 issue of the magazine; and Keren Alfred (Black Writers Fellowship: Researcher) who will be sharing her investigations of breadfruit as a papermaking fiber in a forthcoming issue of the magazine.
Deadline: July 23, 2021
The Black Writers Fellowship: Reporter is an opportunity for a Black writer to identify, research, and write a short-form article profiling an artist, community, studio, or organization in the field of hand papermaking. This fellowship is offered annually to a Black writer who will write an original profile that describes, contextualizes, and highlights a profile subject of their choosing. The subject must be an artist, community, studio, or organization in the field of hand papermaking. The short-form profile will be eligible for publication in Hand Papermaking magazine, Summer 2022 issue. Additionally when applicable, Hand Papermaking will work with the Reporter and the proposed subject to feature the subject’s work on Hand Papermaking’s social-media channels.
