Paper has been made in Vietnam for so long that its origin remains shrouded in mystery. Presumably, paper was introduced to Vietnam from China sometime during the first millennium CE. But unlike Korean and Japanese papermaking traditions—which also claim descent from China—Vietnamese papermaking traditions remain poorly studied, partly due to recent wars with France and the US, and partly due to the sheer cultural and botanical diversity contained within Vietnam.
